One of my favorite coins is this 1988 $5 gold Olympics. It's in an NGC PR 70 ultra cameo slab. IMO facing Victory is a beautiful design, rev. Olympic logo and flame. In my ancient collection is this Greek AE Miletus, Ionia with facing Apollo, rev. lion, 3-2nd cent. BC. Kinda cool to see them side by side. Both are wearing wreaths.   Edited by livingwater

Nice "then-and-now" comparison! Thanks for posting! I always enjoy seeing unexpected pairings.
Elizabeth Jones' depiction of Nike is outstanding - one of my favorites of the modern US series.

Thanks all for commenting. Commems is correct, to the Greeks she was Nike, the goddess of victory. The Romans eventually called her Victory. With the rise of Christianity the form became an angel in Church art, though in the Bible there's no verse saying angels have wings.

I will go against the trend and say the new one is nicer, but that does not mean I would refuse either one! Especially since I have no gold or ancient coins in my collection yet.  |

Remarkable similarity.
At least there should be a coin sized photograph of one coin beside the other real coin, on display in your collection.
Two photos: one for the ancients part of your collection, and one for the moderns part of your collection.
Just as you have shown here, in this thread.

The 1988 $5 gold is 21.6mm, the Greek coin is 18mm.

Imagine the remarkable skill needed to create tiny dies like this so long ago. Modern CAD images will never compare in any way.
