I won this coin in a Heritage auction in 2002. As I recall there was another example in the same grade which was moderately toned. At the time I was attracted by the bright silver color and sharp detail of the coin I won and was pleased that the price was a lot less than that for the toned example. In retrospect, I think that piece had more original surfaces and was in fact the better coin.
I agree with several posters that my coin had been cleaned. Apparently NGC found it "market acceptable" at the time and gave it a pass. I rather doubt it would grade problem-free now if I were to crack it and resubmit.
I still like the coin but if I were shopping for an 1839-O half now I'd be holding out for one with a more original look.
