to the CCF!Before I get around to researching this c/s a bit, I'll share a few thoughts. For starters, it's always appreciated on the CCF to post both sides of a given coin.
Great find, being a CC, Carson City Mint, coin to boot! Given the location of the mint, this stamper could be a western issuer. But, quoting the lyrics of an old song, ".... it ain't necessarily so."
There are some NY City c/s's, known to have been issued circa 1875-76, punched on CC coins. It's plausible that a number of these western coins were brought east by some successful miners who visited the Big Apple. Good story, huh?
This W.H. KING c/s is the product of a prepared, single-punch stamp; this, as opposed to having been created by individual punches, This suggests that the stamp was applied to other items, coins and/or products, as well. If it was a product, the letter size suggests to me a relatively moderately-sized one.
The surname, King, is a relatively common name, and this often seen combination of initials (coincidentally my own) is likewise a fairly common pairing. These aspects typically add to the difficulty of attributing the issuer of a c/s. Generally speaking, I've had far more success attributing earlier 19th century c/s's, pre Civil War issues, than these later pieces.
A look at the Brunk listings offers no insight. I'll see what I can find, if anything, and get back in a few days.
