Per my research, I believe this will be a quick & easy answer, however I wanted to query the community.

1797 (rev 95) are there any OBVERSE or REVERSE diagnostics to attribute a plain versus gripped edge?

I am specifically referencing S-121a / S-121b (although if a pup exists for S-120a / S-120b please inform)

*** Edited by Staff to Add Year Denomination to Title. It's very important to have in the title. ***

Correct.
The differences are only on the edge.

As for PUPs, again the differences are only on the edge.

My information comes from United States Large Cents/1795-1797, Vol. 2, by William C. Noyes.

Thanks Carrs & Kanga,

I expected the above to be true. I'm starting to find additional information regarding edges: Plain/Gripped & Beaded?
From what I've discerned, S-120 does appear as a "Beaded" Variety, however (and more importantly as I am specifically concerned with S-121):

Does the S-121 have a "Beaded" subvariety, that when heavily circulated will be referred to as "Plain"?

plain edge is plain edge.

gripped has raised bumps on half of the edge and crude vertical reeding on the other half.

its possible to tool a gripped edge to resemble a plain edge. there are not many people who can reliably tell the difference.

post some pics and maybe we can help clear it up for you.

the edges from that era are woefully under researched. there are several additional edges besides gripped and they are found on several other varieties as well. the edge variations were most likely on the blanks when they were purchased by the mint. they arent really a mint product.
