Quote:I think I have the opposite pet peeve. It's a US cent, not a British coin! I'll use the word "penny" in colloquial conversation and in expressions that use it - but to say " Wheat penny" or " Indian Head penny" just sounds wrong to me. The coins identify themselves pretty clearly: they're cents! We're actually on the same page! It does sound wrong to call Wheaties, Indians and so for as "pennies". Especially since they say "Cent" right on them and not "Pense". Thanks for your response. I'm glad that I'm not the only one with that pet peeve.

"Nickel five-cent piece" so as to disambiguate from the earlier silver five-cent pieces, better known as Half Dimes. "Nickel" doesn't bother me though.

Finally found another Wheat cent that's over 100 years old! It's been over 2 months since I found my last one (a 1920-P). This time it's a 1921-S. With only 15,274,000 minted, I was pretty lucky to find it. The details are still pretty good. The pictures below are not that good, but there's actually good detail in the wheat ears. Now I have the following: - 1891 Indian Head cent- 1901 Indian Head cent- 1909-P Wheat cent (not VDB) - 1909-P Wheat cent (not VDB) - 1917-P Wheat cent- 1920-P Wheat cent- 1920-P Wheat cent- 1920-P Wheat cent- 1921-S Wheat centCheers!

That '21-S wheatie is a nice coin, AllSeasons! Wheat ears, for whatever reason, are hard to get to show up correctly on photographs in my personal experience... I got these three antiques from the same teller on three separate visits over the past two weeks (all from MWR): Someone should make a thread for 150+ year old CRH and/or circulation finds... I have two such coins lol.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!

@John77 Those are great finds, especially in just 2 weeks' time! I've been looking for a V nickel for the longest time - really glad that you found one. I've been told that these come along once every 50 boxes on average. Still holding out hope. Please wish me luck!

You're welcome, AllSeasons! My lucky teller... Got $50 from her in MWR yesterday and a dateless Philly-minted Buffalo was amongst the coins (I put it in some vinegar a few hours ago to see if I can get a date on it over the coming few days).
Persistency is definitely the key... eventually you'll find a V if you keep at it. The last one I found before this past week was Christmas Eve of last year when I found a 1911 in a Brinks box (also found a 1920 Buffalo in that one).

So it happened again yesterday. Same teller, same branch... same 1910 date.

Nice @John77! My only ancient CRH find thus far was a 1919-P Wheat cent back in December.

I've been searching nickels lately. I have found 1 buffalo in the last 4 boxes. An in the last 6 boxes I found 1 V nickel. I can't tell you how surprised I was a 1900 still in circulation. But my question to you is where is all the 2009 nickels? In the last 6 boxes I have found none.

Low mintage in 2009 because of the Great Coin Jar Dump of 2008.
