I am participating in the CENT Project. I do not have the time to spearhead a similar effort on the JFK Half Dollar, but there might be some interest in this for someone else to spearhead. I just completed $290 in halves in which I tallied every coin. I did this because over the years I have had great difficulty getting some coins to complete sets so I wanted to know if there were other coins that were tough. I also am very interested in others on this forum sharing their information. Below is a coin by coin analysis of my $290. I know there are a lot of half dollar roll hunters on this forum and it would be great if a few of you would do the same on yours and add it below, because there can be geographic bias from my lot. My $290 were customer-wrapped rolls, not bank-wrapped or Fed-wrapped rolls. Based on my results, there are several dates here that might be considered semi-keys: 79D, 86P, 88P, 91D, but analysis from others would be helpful to confirm this. Note that all these dates are at the lowest end of the mintage figures (around or below 15 million). There are also many coins in the 80s that are low in representation. I can also tell you that in the last two years of half dollar roll searching in an area of the country (Shreveport) where Denver mint-marked coins predominate, I have yet to get a single 79D- it is a hole to fill in several of my sets. In my opinion 79D is the toughest one of the business strikes. 82P and 82D are also usually very tough to find, but in this particular batch of coins, there were 9 total 1982 coins. I often don't find any 1982 coins in $200 of halves. Several coins like 64, 66, 00P, and 01D I did not include as semi-keys because 64 and 66 are silver and are much more difficult to find in circulation than clad, and 2000P and 01D are newer coins that may not have circulated to my region of the country. The other thing I've noticed is that finding better condition coins in the 80s is extremely tough, especially given that the 80s total numbers are low. You know, it sure would be nice to purge the 71 and 76 coins from circulation. They account for 144 of 579 coins in my group or about 25%. YIKES! It is interesting that when I spend these halves, some cashier's actually sort through them and want to keep the 1976 coins, as if they are rare. Analysis: $290 halves- 579 coins (1 roll was short one coin) 64-0 64D-1 65-1 66-0 67-2 68D-7 69D-1 71-18 71D-70 72-15 72D-24 73-10 73D-13 74-23 74D-24 76-12 76D-44 77-5 77D-3 78-3 78D-1 79-8 79D-0 80P-3 80D-12 81P-2 81D-4 82P-2 82D-7 83P-3 83D-14 84P-5 84D-3 85P-6 85D-1 86P-0 86D-3 88P-0 88D-4 89P-5 89D-2 90P-3 90D-3 91P-4 91D-0 92P-3 92D-2 93P-3 93D-4 94P-28 94D-17 95P-6 95D-19 96P-7 96D-21 97P-10 97D-38 98P-4 98D-3 99P-5 99D-5 00P-0 00D-31 01D-0 As I get more rolls, I will add to these totals. You have an interesting concept.
Half dollars are heavily separated by collectors so it will prove impossible to get true samples but if you have enough people looking the numbers become more meaningful.
There are some interesting things in these coins since they were used in different places and for different purposes at different times. For instance most of the mid-'80's to mid-'90's coins are beaten badly by usage in casinos. You can still find lots of the mid-'70's issues in near unc condition and you can find BU rolls of the '95 to date coins. There are ome subtleties you'll see if you take a look at them. Few people do.
I find the quarters a lot of fun to study this way because there's almost never a contaminated sample and these oins have een very extensive circulation. Wear is becoming extreme and universal on many dates.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Wow! You have a lot of patience mycrob. Very interesting results. If I get the ambition I'll try to do something similar here on the West Coast and we can compare.

Cladking: You points about casino use are very important and I was aware of it. They still use JFK halves in casinos here in Shreveport, but I get the sense that few people use them even in casinos, because the casino cashier was somewhat surprised whwen I asked for $200 a few months ago. The $200 didn't yield any silver ( I had a topic on this on CCF- casinos coin hunting and silver). There were many very badly worn coins. Reeded edges were nearly gone or completely gone on a lot of them.
Patrick: Welcome to the forum and thanks for your comments and attempt to do some halves in your area. I am very interested in knowing whether some of the semi-keys hold up.
As for whether there is a good mixture of JFKs in circulation: I don't know for sure, until we see some other folks here in the forum try to do a small batch, maybe $200-300 (or more if they can afford it). It is a whole lot easier sorting halves than it is pennies. Dates are easier to read. I use the same sorting method discussed in The Cent Project's web site.

I have a similar page of data on a few hundred dollars in Kennedy halves...when (and if ) I find it I will post the data here. From what I remember the numbers seem pretty good. I was suprised to see so many 71's also- and got sick of seeing bi-centennial halves too ! I also kept a tally of how many were slot damaged and rolling machine damaged (IMO) ...Now to find that sheet of paper....

Well....after a little paper rustling I found it ! This breakdown does not include 1970-D (which I have found NONE! )and the silver was negligible 4 90% and 21 40% in the lot and most of those came from two rolls -customer wrapped from bank- and I don't think it should count with the Fed wrapped bank rolls searched here. I have 22 rolls sitting here waiting for me... but I am not tallying these anymore, to time consuming. These are from Northern Ohio near the Michigan border.
Total count was 2400 coins (120 rolls)
180 coins slot machined right out of collectibility
73 coins damaged by coin rolling machine I did not find any errors of any consequence except for an 82-P no FG. Still looking for that 74-D Doubled Die!

mycrob,
Here are my numbers for JFK Halves from the SF Bay Area. I only did $120 but will add more to this as I go. As a quick glance, it seems like some of the semi key dates from your area are present in good numbers (1991D: 9, 1979D:1) in my area, even with limited sampling. I missed out on the 1988P and 1986P coins, but InfiniteInterest seemed to get these in nice numbers from Northern Ohio. A small proportion of these coins, ~3%, looked pretty dinged up - maybe from slot machines. I didn't find any errors but I'm pretty new at this and don't really know what to look for. Any suggestions?
Best, Patrick

Wow, Infinite that is an amazing number to analyze, PHEW. Must have taken a week to do all that. Thanks Patrick, also- still 79D is pretty rare- just 9 total in 3219 coins from the three postings, and 82P and 82D are tough. I think I'll wait a few more days to maybe a week and see what others are finding and then maybe combine all of it, with additional analysis against mintage numbers.
I am surprised at how many "Not intended for circulation" pieces from 2001-present, yet no 87. Seems like you have a better chance of getting a NIFC piece than a 79D. I would love to know an explanation for why so many 2001 (P only)-2006 coins are getting into circulation. Perhaps many were given as gifts but the receiver of the gift spent them?

My last batch of halfs I did was in august of 2007. I bought them from an bank and the coins were toned from siting an the vault for serval years . I think this batch 1400 dollars was siting there in an long time. One bank teller said 400 dollars worth of them was in her cash drawer for over 3 or 4 monlths before I bought them. I search for halfs all time and been having problems geting them from banks. Most the time I find less 5 dollars of loose coins in tellers tray. Its seems very few peaple turn them in or use them . This I what I found after I took them home. 1. 9 bu rolls full 2000 coins. 2. 13 or 14 rolls full 1971 thru 1976 rolls. Coins were like brand new bu/au coins. I rolled them up and saved them from that batch. 3. Very few 1980 an up coins. They are hard to find for whatever reason 4. Lots wore out 1990 and up coins were being found . 5. Serval toned 2002 and up coins that I did not want install in books. It looked like dealer or collector rejects. 6. 1999, 1971, 1990, proof coins. 7. I found about 150 dollars worth of silver coins. Frankins, 64 coins, Serval 65 thru 69 coins. I think there 17 coins totol in silver. It was worth about 150 dollars silver.
I have 4 banks accounts and its very tough to get banks to ordor them from feds since I want them all time. I am trying to build 4 sets of them. My sets are missing all 1986 and up coins. Very few good or decent coins from 1990 to 2001 out there. Most I ever find I want throw back since they junk on 1990 and up coins. You can find tons of 1970 something bu/au coins in those boxs and bank trays. I am stuck on trying to find 1980 something coins for my sets.
One last thing I don't think you can very good accounting like the cent project you did. Reason why is lots Banks don't stock or will ordor halfs from feds. I try all time to get them for my collection or to search rolls. It got me if you look at us mint production figures they made over an billion jkf halfs from 1964 thru 2002. Where did all they ago or did the us mint start melting them down to make dimes or quarters. It got me where did all go or did an an group of guys hoard them up.
My bank teller who sold that 1000 was telling them she had get on the phone an search there intire Wells fargo bank company to find them. She told me they had them stock and it took them an long time get them. After that she said she can't buy them anymore. I wish I knew since I would want to buy more boxs. Its seems I can't get them from my 4 banks.

I have a 1979 Mint Set. The Kennedy 1979-D in it looks quite good (So does the P). And if it rates as high as MS-67, the book says it could be worth several hundred. Maybe I'll get it slabbed. I just sold a 1979 mint set on ebay last week and only got $7.50 for it. I did look at the coins and kept the better set, but now I wish I would have kept it. I don't really need seven bucks that badly.
