Now that's an interesting point about the 79 mint set. I don't even have any mint sets and maybe I should stock up on 79. In the 2007 RedBook, 79D is only 1.50 in MS63, sure doesn't seem like much. Perhaps a sleeper mint set? Sure I'd love to see 71-76 halves all purged or melted from circulation, but keep the occasional silvers out there. Then maybe we could see more 80s and late 70s (78P & D, 79D). I cannot believe 87P & D are only $5 each in RedBook yet only available in mint sets. This is lower than 86P & D ($7, $6, respectively). I also wonder if 99P will become a semi-key say 20 years from now, with only 8.9 million minted?

"mycrob, If you can get them to remove he 71 & 76 halves could you also try to have the 74's removed also....Waaay too many 1970's halves in the rolls I've searched lately."
Why would you want to remove abundant dates from circulation? Doesn't make any sense. I'm just glad these coins are still "around" though not widely used in circulation.

C'mon folks, I'm just KIDDING. I wouldn't want to see any of our beloved commons purged, and I have no way to do it, unless I start hoarding the commons for the next 50 years. Doubt I'll live that long, and probably there will still be so many commons left for everyone else to hoard too. My son likes the 76 Half best because it is different than all the rest.
Keep those half analysis coming in.

I have a lot of problems, trying to locate the '78-D, and the "P" is almost non-existant on the west coast. I have all the Denver dates in roll sets, half dollar, that is. The '87-P, and D were not released for circulation, but are available , (were) in mint, and proof sets, or souvenir sets. I am currently trying to just get a single "P" for each year, much less a roll! Dick

Here is an update. I've been through $555 in halves this month and here is a coin by coin break down. The numbers I had earlier in this thread are combined here. I'm two coins short because two rolls were short one coin apiece. The highlight is that in my last batch of halves, I had an amazing two solid rolls of 40% silver someone just deposited to the bank. My last batch also gave me my first two 79D coins of the entire year, both in terrible shape, but at least I can fill the holes in my sets. The % of tot column shows the % of that date/mint mark in my batch. The column next to it called "Notes" shows whether this % is lower than expected, higher than expected or about right, based purely on mintage figures (I left out the mintage figures columns, so it would nicely fit). You can see that all the silver issues are lower than expected and this makes sense. There are many in the 1990s that are higher than expected, which I think also makes sense. 71-76 accounts for 44% in my batch, and this is pretty close to the expected (42%) based on numbers minted. The 80D is skewed to the high side because one roll I opened had about 10 coins of 80D in it, all in XF-BU condition. I had a difficult time getting this to post properly, sorry. In my next post I will combine these numbers with the ones provided by others in this thread. Image: Slide1.GIF6 KB Image: Slide2.GIF5.08 KB Grand Total 1108 Tot 40% sil 58 Tot 90% sil 1 71-76% of tot 44.13357401

Here is a combined analysis of the information provided by several members, representing 3749 coins ($1874.50). After combining this all, it now appears that most coins are represented at the % that is to be expected. The major exceptions are the silver pieces, which are underrepresented, and the 1990s, which are over-represented. If the actual % of that coin was within 0.5% either way of the expected, I considered it as being "right" on. However, it should be noted that 81D is very close to being underrepresented (0.29% in our group, expected=0.69%). From 1971-2001, the follow coins were present 20 or fewer times: 78 78D 79D 81D 82P 82D 85P 86P 88P 89P 90D 91D 93P 99P 99D 00P 01D Four of these are present at 10 or fewer times: 78D 82D 93P 00P Another 4 were present 11 times: 79D 81D 82P 85P More analysis would be needed, but I suggest that for the moment these last 8 dates are semi-keys.

mycorob,
Very interesting analysis! I'll keep an eye out for your proposed keys. I'm not sure if you're interested in continuing this, but I'll post my next batch here in case you want to add more numbers.

Thanks, Patrick. Sure, I'd be happy to keep this going and update it. I just got $30 in halves yesterday but I didn't keep track of every coin because it is such a small group.

I love this thread and have been following it. For whatever it's worth, I've probably gone through 50 rolls of Kennedy's the past 2 years or so. I didn't keep track of exact numbers, but I have NEVER ran across the following years/mints:
78P, 79P, 80P, 81P, 84P, 84D, 89P, 90P, 91P, 92P, 94P, 95P AND 99P.
Of course, I'm not counting silver, 70D, 73's, and 87's. I guess it's obvious that I'm in "D" country and it just illustrates how frustrating it is to work with circulating coins and try to get both mint marks.

I have trully been inspired by all those here in this forum who buy $500 boxes of halves. I've never done this before, in part, because I never knew you could ask to have them ordered, and in part because I didn't have the money. I've been doing pretty well getting customer wrapped halves, but they are very hard to come by.
I have two $500 boxes on order and will get my first real searching of Fed boxes. I can hardly wait- they come next Wed. Once I go through them, I will tally every coin and post the results here.

After seeing the last post I decided to order a box of halves myself. I've gone through a couple boxes of cents (working on a 59-07 roll set) and it will be nice to get something a bit less stressful on my eyes. My bank says they'll be in on Friday and, after this week, I'm going to need the break. Is it really only Tuesday? I'll report sometime over the weekend....

I search thousands of halfs,up to $2000 a day sometimes. There's no way I could pile up and keep track of every half I look at. I just go by the mintages, I keep every '87 I find and all the silver but that is about it. I've almost filled my Dansco Kennedy book, but I only put nice coins in it to start with- filling holes is not ME thing. Anyways thats my report on the subject- not to take anything away from you guys, just do whats fun. HH Mark

Wow, now that is a lot of halves to go through, PHEW! I'd love to be able to afford to do several thousand a week.
My one problem is that I keep too many of the nicer grade coins when I roll search, because I think I may get into putting sets together. But I never get to the set building.
My other problem is that I don't like taking the halves back to the bank. I try to do my part to get them back into active circulation. You can't just leave $50 in halves on the table for a restaurant bill, so I mainly use the halves for $10 transactions or less.

I also try to put them into circulation. But I only buy 1 or 2 rolls at a time. Just bought one today - got 1 new one for my main collection and 2 for my second collection and upgraded 2 others.
Just went to my local HyVee drugstore - mailed a letter, bought some paper towels and chicken broth - all with Kennedy's!!
