Hello Everyone,

I have posted a few threads on the 'ancients' forum, but usually only for some help to identify coins I find. I am looking for some thoughts, opinions, advice, or just conversation about starting a collection of Roman Republic coins.

This genre of ancients appeals to me because the coins are small, fairly uniform, offer some great imagery from a pre-christ world consciousness, and seem comparatively rare. I can also find some great specimens around Rome and prices are . . . reasonable and negotiable.

Currently, I collection American silver coins when I find them for sale below retail, large silver world coins (trying for a large silver from each country), and any other coins that I am attracted to (this has been limited to some papal medals, interesting medieval hammered coins, etc.).

I currently own exactly two Roman Republic coins and one early imperial Roman coin; the two Roman Republic coins are the Flaminius and small AR Sesterius. The one early imperial coin I own is a quinarius of Octavian with a cista mystica reverse.

My mantra has always been to buy what I like, don't overpay, and buy the best possible condition I can afford. Any other thoughts, suggestions, opinions would be appreciated!

Best,

R.

You could not be in a better place to buy!

However, the issues there are the same, which include the need to buy from a reputable dealer and know how to recognize the fake from the real coin. I can also add get good reference books and learn something of the market so that you should know what you should be paying.

There are quite a few people here who can give you some good advice.

You also need to be aware of Italy's laws regarding ownership of antiquities. Under Italian law, while ownership of ancient coins is legal, exporting them is not as straightforward. So long as you remain in Italy with them, you should be fine.

It is also essential to keep records of import or purchase, preferably with photographs so you can prove that this specific coin belongs with that receipt. Any coin which does not have proof of purchase from an authorized dealer, or proof of legal import from another country, might be liable to seizure. If the government accuses you of owning looted or stolen coins, it is basically up to you to prove that they are not.

They're not going to worry about a tiny collection of only a couple of coins like what you have now, but the larger your collection becomes, the more the Ministry of Culture will be interested in it. There is a threshold of value for a coin collection, currently €46,598.00, below which the Ministry of Culture aren't going to care unless they have direct evidence that you're personally involved in looting or actively aiding and abetting the looters.

I'd buy from Roma Numismatics on the next auction perhaps in the Roman Republic coins. Like you can buy the multiple lot from the list of February 16th upcoming auction and have some fun posting a few here for us to enjoy! I like the company a lot and is the only European place I buy anymore as they are very fast to the USA having left the EU.
