1946 Jefferson Nickel

Beside the "S"mm, 1946 Nickels also had a "D"mm for Denver.

Hi Crater, yes mintmarks were placed on coins to identify branch mint production location (where it was made). San Francisco used an "S" mintmark on nickel-copper Jefferson nickels 1938 through 1964. San Francisco struck the fewest Jefferson nickels of the three mints throughout the early years; 1938 to 1964. A total just over 230 million nickel-copper alloy coins. Low mintages signal to collectors a less available coin and in general values follow with slightly higher premiums but you will still have to go to work or play powerball next week if you want to retire.

I was looking at the Variety Vista site and run onto this RPM for this year:

First thought? (why would they list Machine Doubling?)
Second thought, Listed as an East RPM. So they aren't considering the MD.
Third thought? There is no East on the fields? Why the listing?
Last thought. Note the lower loop? You can see a Serif on the lower loop. That is the RPM. First time I've seen that before!
So if you think they were wrong, look closer and see why it was listed.
