Hi all,

I came across this one on the reverse during tonight's pocket change examination. My first thought was a PMD scratch, but zooming in gave me a view that said maybe a die crack? Of particular curiosity is the "crack" (or scratch) seems to possibly be going through the S in "Kansas", but under the 8 in "1861". Any light you can shed would be good light. Thanks!

It looks like a scratch - when a scratch is deep enough, it will up-well metal on either side, making it appear raised. But in this case, you can see the trough in the middle of the 2 raised areas.
Also a die crack will not be so straight, it will meander a bit as it breaks.

May I add, A die crack will not affect the rim.
Clearly this rim has been effected.

It will have an incuse mark down the center of the line and raised edges on the outside edge the of trench:

If it were a die crack it would be raised in the center and the line would not be exactly straight:
