I assume most of you are not fans of theses. but I'm intrigued. Since Christmas, I have been gifted two antique necklaces, handed down by family. Two entirely different people gifted them to me. <3

Now I find it intriguing that both are set in the same likeness!
First one was a 1923 Peace dollar. This second one is an 1883 morgan.

They look like the same setting.. but their is absolutely no way they were. Is this pretty normal? I don't know why but I'm so intrigued by this "fad". lol

Ondiwave, after my Mom passed I found this in a box of "treasures" she had tucked away. Wish I knew the story behind it.

That style bezel seems to have been very common, and you can still buy one. Look up " Morgan dollar bezel." Not sure if that's what you are asking...

@kbbpll Thanks, I wasn't really asking anything haha was just sharing. I'm so interested in why people did this back in the day. What / why they picked the coin & wish I knew the history they each hold.
This was given to me by my FIL who is 80, it was given to him by his father. The Peace dollar I received was a present from my mom's friend, it was her mothers who came to the usa after fleeing Germany.
Its intriguing to me the lives these two pieces have lived . and now they will continue to live together with me.

Nice pieces to pass down to family. Coins have been used in jewelry since Greek/Roman times. My uncle has an ancient Greek gold stater in a gold ring, he likes to wear it.

I inherited from my mom a necklace that had a 1/20 oz silver Mexico libertad in a locket. I took the coin out since the clasp was broken. I've seen Morgan dollars glued to belt buckles, etc.

I think most collectors prefer their coins not be in jewelry.

If these Morgans were rare years or better condition they might be worth taking out of the bezel, but they are not so I'd just leave them as is.

Yes, a jewelry item--most likely used as a pendant.

A bracelet made of road rash wheat cents would be cool...

LivingWater is correct! Coins have been used as jewelry for centuries. It wasn't and still isn't a "fad". I suppose that you could surmise that they were special coins or gifts to someone else among the coins long lives. Morgans were and still are used as jewelry. You may never know the history but, it's always fun to think about it. Those bezels are still used today and yours don't match the age of the coins.

Coin jewelry is still quite popular. I have a couple of necklaces that are Panda coins (gold). I like Pandas and my Hubby bought them for me as Anniversary gifts. I don't know...I feel special when I wear them and love to talk about the Pandas. I've also seen Walking Liberty half-dollars used in necklaces as well. Ofcourse, we've all seen money clips, watches and so forth using coins. Maybe they were like "pocket pieces" are today.

Enjoy them and the heritage that you may know from them. They both are quite nice.

As an added note. Folks used to drill holes in their coins to either hang them from their necks or to keep them from falling out of their pockets. There's a lot of interesting history behind holed coins.

Coins were also holed when nailing them above a door for good luck. I have an 1876 half dollar made into a watch fob. And here's a 1300 year old necklace with Roman coins, recent discovery. https://www.archaeology.org/issues/...ole-treasure

Now that would be a history I would like to read. I have a few holed coins my Grandmother passed down to me.
