Gday everyone,

I am investigating die pairs in 1796 draped bust large cents, and currently I am stuck up on the differences in obverse dies 22 and 25. Specifically on the NC-6 excelsior example. In Sheldon's Penny Whimsy it is said that the HWH (Highest Wave Hair) differs in position from "about center under ER" in die 25 versus "under the extreme left foot of R" in die 22. However, I am looking on Goldberg auctions 54 and the examples they provided of S114 (obv die 22) and NC6 (obv die 25) and the obverse alignments look identical.

Does anyone see something that I am not seeing? Beyond the die crack in the legend, which may not be visible on worn coins, how can I tell the alignment if the HWH alignment is the same?

Furthermore in Breen's book, I believe the listing for NC6 is erroneously listed as die pair 22W instead of, citing Goldberg, die pair 25Y (S118/119 obv marriage with S117 rev). Can anyone else attest to this?

Hopefully @CarrsCoins will see this post, or @GERMANICVS

I love my early copper but far from an expert on 1796 attribution, Breen/Sheldon varieties, NC varieties and die states.

That being said, you should keep in mind that 50+ years of additional research has been done since Sheldon wrote his book. Much like Newcomb, some of the attributions have changed or been revised based on new research that's been done throughout that time.

I think you're on the right track with auction catalogues, though. That's usually my go-to when I am not at home and can't access my reference books, or when I need more up-to-date information.

Generally speaking, I'm not a big fan of HWH as one of the diagnostic pickups on DB's, but sometimes on badly worn examples it's one of the few parts of the design still visible; even then it can be a crapshoot based on how badly the obverse is worn at BERT.

hey sorry I'm a bit late to the party but I think I can help here.

the die pairs breen and goldbergs are referencing are different numbering systems. goldbergs is using the system from the Noyes book, which is the most frequently used standard. breen has his own system that hasnt really been met with much acceptance.

the easiest way to tell 114 from nc-6 is the location of the T in liberty in relation to the brow lock. on 114 the t is centered on the brow lock. on nc-6 it is fully to the right.
