Just recently picked this up, it is a 1917 P Buffalo nickel broadstrike, I believe. Very excited to come across this one and it would be my first broadstruck Buffalo nickel. It is just a hair under the size of a quarter and weighs 4.93 g. It was likely struck with some kind of collar malfunction and you often get quite detailed center of the strike with missing elements toward the edges. Some of the interesting features are a slanted rectangle divot where the designer initial would be and on the reverse a really elongated tail and truncated rear leg. It is interesting to see the different degrees to which the lettering of USA got filled in with metal.

Every time I look at this coin I see something new, so cooool! Do you have any pix from the side, how thin is it? Love the Buffalo series. Thanks for sharing

Thanks everyone, felt lucky to come across this one.

John1, no problem, actually another interesting part of the story, got it on ebay, was a 7-day auction but to my surprise I was the only bidder in the end, so I got for opening bid $10 + S&H

Jadenusa, didn't think of getting a side shot of the thickness difference next to a typical strike but can do that tonight and post, thanks.

Well now that was a bargain, and lucky for you none of us found that auction or I'm sure you may have had to pay quite a bit more. Nice pick for your collection.

I hope so John1, that coin is worthy of slabbing! A 2x cardboard flip doesn't really do it justice, my $0.02.

A spectacular error coin with a very pleasant old patina. Well done @1buff!

You already know how jealous I am of it! Killer score, especially at that price! I'm also still in shock it didn't get additional bids.

John1, I think eventually I will get it slabbed but not right now, just enjoying the differences after seeing so many regular struck Buffalo nickels

Westcoin and Ty2020b, thanks, yes I really expected more competition on this one, not sure how it snuck under the radar but no complaints

Spence, thanks, I agree about the patina on this one a nice added bonus

Jadenusa got a side shot of the broadstrike (left) vs. regular struck (right) Buffalo nickel, best guess the broadstrike is about 20-25% thinner
