jbuck, it just so happens that I do hunt and fish and you are correct with your statement. It is about the thrill of finding these in the wild.
I knew you would get it!

I just got done going through 6,000 nickels and will be searching another 4,000 tomorrow. I found my second 1939-S so far this year.
Outstanding!

I will do a separate 10,000 nickels searched update tomorrow, which brings me to 40,000 searched so far.

I searched another 10,000 nickels over the past two days. I found one nickel that I needed, a 1945-D

I did find a really good 1908 Liberty V nickel, my first in this 40,000 in this journey to complete the 1938-1961 Jefferson set

Also found two buffalos, a dateless and a very beat up 1937
Excellent!

Coinfrog - it's the thrill of the hunt. When I initially started this back in 2014 I thought this would be fairly easy to complete having found a 1950-D in my first box, along with several buffalos and a couple of V nickels in the first 8,000. I have a whole new appreciation for those first couple of boxes. I'm determined to find them all and now document the journey.

I just placed my order for another 10,000 nickels. I'm hoping to go through them Thursday and Friday evening.

Just from watching the super-speed video (on 2x speed, actually!), it looks like you dump everything above 1959? I am curious what the scope is for, are you grading the 1938-1959 nickels, examining them for doubled dies and varieties, or something else?

I keep them for potentially working on another book in the future or if someone I know is curious about getting into the hobby I have plenty to help get them started. Also I keep them as a part of my overall collection. I have a rolls of 1960 and 1961 nickels so I don't need anymore.

It was interesting watching someone with such a different approach from my own. I get $20 of nickels every two weeks, and go through every coin super-thoroughly with a magnifier. I have a little collection of hornets to study, a hoard of MD/DDD nickels to study, a half roll of the Jefferson's Morning Paper die gouge (or whatever it is), and then the coins I study for varieties. That table is probably more than I could go through in a year. Truly epic video! =)

Best of wishes for completing your circulation find set. I recognize all 5 of the missing dates from my own nickel search quest years ago.

It can be done so hang in there.

nickelguy88, a question... I think there might be a typo in your chart. Have you only found TWO 1940 Philly nickels? That number seems way off in relation to everything else.

John77 good point on the 1940 P because I know I have found at least 18. Something must not be synching up.

Thank you... sometimes spreadsheets do that - if you have a wrong letter or character somewhere it can mess everything up lol.

I just got done searching through another 10,000 nickels on my journey to complete the 1938-1961 Jefferson collection. This is my first search where I did not find any coins that I needed, however I did have some good finds. Not a single Buffalo nickel this time around! I did find a worn 1906 Liberty nickel. Below are my findings for this most recent search and a graph of the total for the 50,000 thus far.

Also, is it proper etiquette in this forum to create a separate post for every 10,000 searched as I progress along or would it be better if I kept everything inside all one thread?

1938 - 1
1939 - 7
1940 - 12
1940 D - 2
1940 S - 4
1941 - 9
1941 D - 2
1941 S - 1
1943 P - 1
1945 D - 1
1945 S - 2
1946 - 5
1946 D - 2
1947 - 4
1947 D - 1
1948 - 6
1948 D - 1
1949 - 1
1949 D - 5
1949 S - 1
1950 - 2
1951 - 1
1951 D - 1
1951 S - 1
1952 - 3
1952 D - 3
1952 S - 1
1953 D - 2
1953 S - 1
1954 - 1
1954 D - 4
1954 S - 1
1955 D - 7
1956 - 1
1956 D - 4
1957 D - 4
1958 - 3
1958 D - 12
1959 D - 7

No Buffalo nickels ):

1 Liberty nickel 1906

27 Canadian cents

2 foreign coins, a 2009 Bermuda and great condition and a corroded pineapple coin from the Bahamas

I'll be uploading the YouTube video at a later date

Love your posts, but I think having all of your hunting on one thread would probably be easier for everyone to follow... everything concise and in one place - it's organized and efficient at the same time.

Thanks for the update, always good to hear where you're at with your search and what you're finding.

I like your presentation/organization of the data.

Interesting journey! About a 1/100 chance of finding something pre-1960 in this large sample size.

Out of curiosity, how many 2009 nickels and impaired proofs have you found?

I found 3 2009-P in this most recent batch. I'm going to stop looking for them though. They slow the process down quite a bit looking at the dates on the newer nickels.

I am going to start another thread solely dedicated to this nickel journey so that it is all in one place.

Thank you all for the feedback! Below is the video of this latest hunt. I am getting more educated with my video editing software Davinci 18, and will be adding close ups and photos of my finds as well as the chart logging all of my finds.

I'm so glad to have found this forum. The advice and ideas early on in this really helped me to get this organized to log all of my finds.
