2022 Lincoln Penny Mint Error? - Coin Community Forum

HeavyHog Valued Member United States 59 Posts	Posted 05/28/2023 10:01 pm Hello all. Story behind this one. I found a bunch of coins in a cupholder in our family van. They were covered in spilled soda or juice or God knows what. They were all stuck together in a sort of US coin granola bar. Washed them up but they still didn't look spendable because they were covered in something akin to carbonite. I soaked them for a little bit in CLR and they came clean. I started looking through them and found this one. Looks like some kind of weird blobs. Any help on what this is and what it is called? Thanks all! Report this Post to the Staff

jfeed Pillar of the Community United States 1278 Posts	Posted 05/28/2023 10:42 pm I'm not anywhere near an expert, but I think they are plating bubbles caused by zinc core "rot". It's the beginning of the end for all one cent coins made since 1982. Try pushing them down with a tooth pick. Might want to spend it fast :) Report this Post to the Staff

HeavyHog Valued Member United States 59 Posts	Posted 05/29/2023 10:04 am John1, Understood. I've known that cleaning coins is not good. But when I say they were stuck together I mean stuck. I thought that since they were just common pocket change and that the chance that there would be something collectable in there was slim, I only had two choices. Either clean them so they could be spent or put them on a shelf as some sort of modern art piece. Maybe I could have sold it on ebay...could have called it "Coins in Syrup" a modern take on the economy or some such nonsense. Thanks for the help as always! Paul Report this Post to the Staff

Since you are a new member, I did not know if you knew about not cleaning coins so I figured I would mention it. I understand your choosing to clean them, but other members needed to know about not cleaning coins until you post a couple of photos here on CCF and ask about cleaning before anyone actually does it.Better safe than sorry.
