Now that I am looking at Lincoln Wheat cent doubles, I have a question about identification. Tropical Bats calls them elf shoes. It seems that many doubled die (particularly Class IV: Offset) examples have a heavily hooked E in the We of IGWT. Many DDO examples also seem to have a lopsided T in Trust and/or Liberty.

When we see these on a Wheat cent, is that a giveaway that there is a doubled die in play? Is it a 1:1 correlation, or are there also times when a regular ol' penny will happen to have an elf shoe hook?

Question:-Elf-Shoes-And-Mutant-T.

I ask in particular because I believe I have seen these shapes in previously searched rolls. Maybe I should go back and pull those wheat cents out again and have a second look?

I haven't noticed that term of art "elf shoes" before and so I'm interested to see what @tb says. My initial thought is that this distortion of letters is indicative of die distortion, such as can occur when a die is used at the end of its useful life.

"Elf shoes" appear on the E of WE on most Class VI doubled dies. I don't know the exact mechanism, but for some reason, the extremities of the devices seem to become more distended than the center regions. You see the same thing with the horns on the top and bottom of the B in LIBERTY

@SamCoin would you consider this to be an effect from a hubbing process error ?
