Hi,

KM #56, 5 Lire 1914R

I came across this coin last week, didn't buy it 'cause I wasn't sure if it was a genuine coin. The seller kindly allowed me to take some pictures.

What is your verdict? Is it fake or genuine?
Please be specific if you can.

thanks!

to the forum. I don't know if it is real or not, but it is one of the most beautiful I have ever seen.

From the picture, color does not seem to be silver. This coin is must be silver and very expensive and for sure a candidate for counterfeiting. I'm not an expert in Italian numismatic, but if it is fake it's an excellent fake. Could it be a pattern?

Given the high value of this particular coin, I would be very wary of buying one without a certainty of authenticity.

,The weight is close at 24.77 grams, but not close enough for me. The coin should weight 25 grams. I agree it doesn't look like a silver coin. I think this is one of those Chinese copies. If it were real you be looking at paying about $7,500.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!

I've done additional research on this coin and found the following link very useful, it shows very nice genuine coins as well as weight and diameter, enjoy!

(some descriptions are in Italian, some are in German. Use your fave translation tool to do the job, if needed.)

Two things worth noting:

1) As Echizento mentioned, all coins show a weight around 24.9x grams.
2) The thickness of the rim.

Hi,
here in attach an example of 5 Lire 1914 quadriga briosa from Vittorio Emanuele III, I can garantee it is a fake or an imitation if you like

Image: Fake-Or-Genuine-1914r-Italian-5-Lire-? 005lqbr1914-imitation.jpg
97.47 KB

weight is: 23.25 g.
large is: 37.2 mm
thick is: 2.8 mm

anyway, in Italy is quite usual to find this coin as an imitation, since it is considered the best coin from Vittorio Emanuele III, and coins from Vit. Em. III are considered the best Italian coins minted.

The price is quite right, in Italy it is proposed at 2/4 euros, while the orinal start at 1.000 (thousand) euros.

Anyway I have to say that the edge legend "FERT" seems really good to be an imitation, it is really close to the same character reported on other good Vit. Em. III coins I have as 2 Lire.

Thank you Rosso_rubino, that was quite pretty good info.

I will recommend the seller of this coin to send it to a coin grading company.

My gratitude to those who contributed to this thread!
