Hello everyone, I was searching a few penny rolls of 2022 pennies and noticed that "States" on the reverse was very weak or almost missing on a few. Just looking for some insight on what this is or what causes it. Thank you in advance for your input!!

Interesting, thank you Dearborn. Is this a fairly common error?

Grease on die, no value unless extreme which this is not.

. Too minor to have any premium over face value.

Umm, sorry Bic, got busy with dinner to get back sooner - yes a Grease Filled Die is fairly common - especially minor ones like this one. If more than say, half of a coin is missing, it may carry a bit of a premium.

A weak strike would also show a weak rim. I think it is a combination of grease and the fact that the obverse side using a lot of metal in that area. Please work on posting a bit better quality photos, the better the pics you post the better we can help you.

Thank you all for the input! Here are a few more examples I found that are a bit more extreme. I put a "normal" penny in the middle for comparison purposes. If you notice on the obverse side of the ones with grease in the die the "LI" in liberty is also weak.

There's a scraped or smeared quality to the fields between the faded letters, following the arc of the rim. Does that happen with a Greaser? The quarters I have with Grease Filled Die evidence just have the letters clogged, but nothing seemed to happen to the field metal.

This almost looks similar to a Ring of Death, if the Coin Wrapping Machine used a flatter, gentler mechanism.

Brandmeister thank you for the input, my understanding of coin verbiage is still lacking. What you're saying is this isn't a manufacturing defect but possibly the machine that wraps the new coins? Thank you again for the info
