Perth Mint - Did you know koi are often portrayed as two halves of the yin and yang symbol in feng shui, representing opposing yet balancing forces that govern the universe? This month's unboxing video shows one of only 200 Koi Fish 2023 2 Kilo Silver Antiqued High Relief coins.

A very cool coin for someone who has everything. Its a great looker and the antique finish and high relief are a nice add, but a bit overkill being 2 kilos and in USA dollars looks like $2,821. Kind of reminded me of when they made the 1 kilo star wars death star below but that one impresses star wars fans where this is more a nice general design. That one had 299 but tens of thousands of collectors worldwide.

I mean that type of coin even with only 200 mintage generally arent going to increase in value much due to their original high cost that few can afford. For that mintage should be 99 or less. Same thing happens a lot with gold collectible coins due to their high intrinsic value. I would however snatch it up if it were like a 2 or 3 oz with that cool design and under $299. Thanks for posting.

Koi fish are part of the carp fish family.
A common species is the common goldfish.

Sadly, they have been accidently or (deliberately?) released into Australian rivers, and are now a major pest fish in Australia, often out competing Australian native fish. They also undermine river banks, resulting in riverbank trees collapsing into the river, to cause river navigation problems. They also have to capacity to cause extreme turbidity, that greatly affects river aquatic both plant and animal, life in general.

If you are lucky enough to catch a decent sized feral goldfish, you will be disappointed when it comes to eating them. They are the closest thing that I know of, to the flavor of shredded cardboard.

Wildlife managers, if they catch enough of them, sell them for the manufacture of fertilizer.

I suspect that the Perth Mint has aimed this Koi collector 2kg bullion coin at the Asian bullion collector market, not the Australian market, due to high hobby interest in breeding multi colored koi fish in Asian countries, such as China.
If that is the case, the antique finish is OK, but it would have been even better presented if fish had been multi color pad printed over the antique silver finish.

I remember a Hanna Barbera cartoon of Silvester the Cat panning for goldfish.

Perth Mint have built a good reputation for themselves with the production of large high quality bullion coins, with (often) unique features, such as the coins shown here.

I remember visiting the Perth Mint in Hay Street about 7 years ago
The one tonne Million Dollar solid pure gold coin was on display,
and it was possible to get up close and personal with for a 'selfie'.

Their minting facilities are in Hay Street (Perth City), and their refining facilities are on the grounds of Perth International Airport.

Heres a nice article on the history, https://koipondhq.com/chinese-koi-fish/ Koi carp are significant to both Japanese and Chinese art. So, it's safe to say that the first Koi came from China, not Japan according to the article. Koi are the most popular freshwater fish worldwide, and you can find them everywhere so I agree that its a great choice for a design that appeals to a large number of people but that may not translate to a 2 kilo coin investment at that pricing except to those where money is not an issue in their lives. I would think it would be quite popular as mentioned on a 1-5oz coin at more down to earth pricing. Heres another from Solomon Island in 2 oz to show it can easily be translated to that size:
