I have a penny that I think looks like the 1982 small date penny. I am new to coin collecting but I realize this probably isn't it. Could someone tell me why this one isn't the small date so I know what to look for?

That is indeed a small date cent. It has to weigh 3.1g for it to be anything special or valuable though.

I could only find a kitchen scale to buy and it keeps fluctuating between 2-3g. I think I need a better scale.

Not only an accurate-to-two-decimal-places scale; full, large and sharp pics of the obverse and reverse would be very welcome.

I agree it appears to be a small date, but what is with the Mint Mark? Is the D possibly re-punched? Would like to see a clearer image.

yes, a small date cent, if it is 'fluctuating between 2 and 3 grams, then I'll venture a guess that it will weigh at 2.5g, which would make it a zinc coin.
A much more accurate weight is necessary here, Also a better close-up of the MM would be nice.

It is a SD but it looks like a copper plated zinc core one to me.
