Hi all, so I won't name the shop here, but a well known place, they had a coin for me that is hard to find, and it was in AG3. I went to look and it turned out to be ANACS AG3 Details, corroded, looked horrible and needless to say I didn't buy it.

But the dealer was representing (verbally, just to me) as AG3 with no qualifiers. I guess technically it's not lying, it did say AG3 on the slab but the other big two graders don't put a number on their details coins, and it seemed shady to me, this could cause some to get fleeced. Any thoughts?

For sure it is important to look at the coin and not just the label, but it sounds like this guy was selling a half-truth by omitting the details designation. I'd bring my business elsewhere.

Never buy a coin sight unseen. If you purchased that coin without looking at it, it could still have been AG3 and still looked terrible.

So let me get this straight, the coin had "AG-03 Details" noted on it, with no further description?

In this case, AG03 Details or AG Details doesn't matter, since there's only one AG grade. Personally, I prefer the way ANACS does it. I'm not sure why you think that's "shady." The way the dealer presented it was somewhat shady, but not how ANACS labels them.

There was a brief time when ANACS would grade a coin

"F Details NET AG3" or similar

is that what the label says?

If so, you're talking about over 30 years ago...

Hey thank you for the replies. Nothing wrong w/ ANACS method (numeric grade on their details coins), they can do what they want, but I found it "shady" for the dealer to say they had an AG3 example for me to look at w/out mentioning the "details/corroded" part. I didn't agree to buy it sight unseen or anything, so no harm done except a little time wasted.
