I continue to go through my inherited coins and am finding some surprises

this was loose in a box mixed in with Walking Liberty 1/2's and other coins

Don't get too excited.

Looks to me like it's been worked over and the missing leg has had a lot of help getting removed.

that would be bummer, and would explain why it was loose in a box with other rando coins-also why I am here and not out on the street trying to push it off on someone

Definitely does not appear genuine. Doesn't have the markers of an authentic 3-legger.

Alas, this is definitely fake. A real one would have remnants of the hoof visible.

It looks off. Can you post up larger images of this please?
If I'm not mistaken, on the 3-legger, the hoof of the missing led should still be present, and there are a few other markers too, like the rear legs look 'moth eaten' (according to PCGS)

Sorry to burst your bubble but I concur with others that this is fake. No hoof, pee stream nor roughness to the hind leg are but a few indications that this is a forgery.
