Possible Counterfeit/Fake 1916-D Mercury Dime On Ebay?

BadDog Pillar of the Community United States 1374 Posts	Posted 09/01/2023 12:43 pm There's a new auction listing on ebay for 1916-D Mercury dime, PCGS AU58 with cert # 35039114 on the pictured slab. That cert # verifies on PCGS website as a 1916-D AU58 merc. So, far so good. But, the ebay listing in its details section says the cert # is 35162903 which also verifies as 1916-D AU58 merc, but it doesn't match the photos cert. So, which cert number is correct? First possible red flag. If the ebay photo cert # 35039114 is correct then, the PCGS cert page indicates that the coin was auctioned by Stacks Bowers in June 2018. The SB photos show a dime with a good degree of toning on both the obverse and reverse. The eBay seller's photos don't appear to show the same toning. Once again, it doesn't look like the seller's photo to me. Second possible red flag. If the details section cert # 35162903 is correct, then the PCGS page for this cert has a True View photo of the coin and it doesn't look to be the same coin to me. Third possible red flag. The seller has 0 feedback. Fourth possible red flag. What do think? Fake slab with a fake coin, or legit? The starting bid is pretty low if it's legit. Edit: Also, the PCGS label in the seller's photo is an NFC label. I believe those were started with the Gen 6,1 holders. Those holders have embedded PCGS letters in the lower front right corner and NFC logo in the lower left front corner. I'm not seeing these embedded logos on the sellers photos. If they were serious about cleaning their site from scams, counterfeit coins, stolen goods etc then they should use their corporate clout to liase with law enforcement to go after the scammers. Shouldn't the Secret Service be involved with fake currency? Or the FBI with wire fraud? Of the local police? How hard is it for any of them to knock on the door of the scammer with a search warrant and do their jobs? How about PCGS doing something about it being a fake slab? its intellectual property theft and damage to reputation. The number of fake slabs out there means I sometimes pass up on buying slabs if I have concerns so PCGS inaction is costing their grading clients money. For all they know the scammers are using the proceeds of their crime to fund terrorism (has happened before) or this is just a part of something bigger like the cartels selling fake and stolen goods. I've long felt that they violate the Hobby Protection Act, but I don't know if they've ever been challenged in court over it. The law is as follows: Quote: Any person engaged in the sale in commerce of imitation numismatic items shall be subject to the requirements of the Act and the regulations promulgated thereunder. It shall be a violation of the Act and the regulations promulgated thereunder for a person to provide substantial assistance or support to any manufacturer, importer, or seller of imitation numismatic items, or to any manufacturer or importer of imitation political items, if that person knows or should have known that the manufacturer, importer, or seller is engaged in any practice that violates the Act and the regulations promulgated thereunder. Whenever someone reports an obvious counterfeit and ebay continues to allow it to be sold, the criteria "knows or should have known" is met, in my opinion at least. Report this Post to the Staff
