Hi all,

I was wondering what you think of the grade of this piece?

Thanks in advance!

i think the coin may have been improperly stored or even an older cleaning and re-toned. the color and dullness of the surfaces are not correct for an AU coin. take a close look at the beard. from my vantage point it looks like someone scratched an oval across it. because thats in a key area, if that was scratched into the surface, the coin would detail. K3-K4 reverse strike is weak. looks like all the luster is gone. maybe lower AU. AU50 or 53 good chance it would not grade straight for a couple reasons.

Good analysis. I'll say AU-55 sharpness but agree there are concerns.

The obverse toning is uneven, it should have the brown woody color you see through out. Reverse harshly cleaned and retoned.

I suspect this was a full woody coin and some fool got the bright idea to try to "fix it" - being a semi-key and all. Well, you cannot remove woody toning, it's ingrained into the metal.

AU details, cleaned and retoned
