I know diddly about Ancients, but these two coins have that 'iffy' look and feel to them. Possible copies/fakes? First coin is 38mm across & second is 42mm across.
I agree, the first one looks fake. The obverse legend is for Antoninus Pius, and being that large it's probably supposed to be a sestertius, but he rarely faces left on his coins. The reverse also looks fuzzy with loss of detail.
The second one is definitely fake. It's a tourist copy of a famous design issued by the Greek colony of Syracuse, Sicily, issued as silver tetradrachms and dekadrachms - and being that big, this one's probably supposed to be a dekadrachm. The cracks all over the surface are also a clear sign of a quick-and-nasty cast copy.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
Since I'm new at ancients, perhaps you can confirm a hunch when I saw these. Wouldn't an authentic coin have more fine detail preserved in protected areas of the portrait and such? Conversely, these same areas seems to be where detail is usually lost during the casting process.
