1896 Penny Error Or Not

I have this 1896 Indian Head penny and on the reverse it has what I think constitutes as an error but I really don't know. I posted a couple pictures. If the pictures aren't good enough let me know and I will take some more. Thanks for any help. You guys/gals rock!

A photo of the obverse might give us a clue.

It looks like a very worn coin with some sort of an old residue smeared on the reverse surface.

@biz, the reason why we are all asking for a pic of the obverse is that those flat spots most likely are corresponding to mechanical damage on the front.
