Of the fake 1914-D coins that have been altered, this is probably the more common method. Here a 1944-D has had the left side of the first 4 removed to make it look like a 1. Easy to spot as this screws up the spacing between the 9 and the "new" 1, and it is now much too wide. On this example the did a very nice job of removing that section of the 4, and the color match is very good with few remaining scratch marks, but they did fail to remove it completely and there are two numbs of the crossbars visible. And the kicker on these, is that in 1914 the coin had no designer initials, so below the bust it should be blank. While in 1944 the initials VDB can be found there. So on this coin they went and scratched off the initials. Odd that they just left all those scratches there after taking such care to remove them around date.

We've seen this one quite a bit. Might fool a novice but it's quite obvious with the markers @Bats tells about.

Good education on this coin. For me, this coin is special, I found one when I was about 11 years old in New Mexico out in the desert and came across a two stone high rock house foundation, dug around it and from then on I collected coins.

It always surprises me how many people have done this over the years. Are some of them just having a joke or are there really that many cretons out there trying to cheat people.

Yeah, I found one when I was about 14 years old. Took it to my barber who was a collector and set me straight. Really bummed me out as my household was not very well off.

After putting all my 1 cent fakes and counterfeits into their own folder, here are the results for 1914-D:

14 altered date 1944-D
1 carved D
1 added mint mark
1 struck

It is fairly impressive tooling. You can see a faint top edge of the removal under scope but there is hardly a blemish to the base.
