When I first saw this coin, I figured it for a proof. Upon further examination, I feel the surfaces are that of a business strike coin- a very nice one too ! The field surfaces are not mirrored, they are more "matte" like than mirrored. I do not grade very many coins above MS-65, most any imperfections would preclude me from assigning anything over 65. After looking at this coin several times now, under varying degrees of magnification, I have yet to find a mark on this coin. Not a couple small hidden marks or one of any size- anywhere on this coin. Take a look and let me know what you think. You cannot see it well in the pics, but the steps on the reverse are all there, and very well defined. I am personally trying to convince myself it is an MS-67 with a shot at 68...what say you ? I am editing to include a couple closer shots of the surfaces of this coin so everyone can decide whether these are the surfaces of a proof coin or not.      Edited by InfiniteInterest

Just my opinion, but I would say it has to be a proof, What ever it is it's a beauty.  And, for sure a MS-67 |

I don't believe it's a proof. Too satiny looking. Great looking LMC. Spotting on obverse and a reverse spot would keep this coin from an MS68RD grade. I'd say MS67RD for sure. Very nice! swcoin.ecrater.com

Oustanding coin! EDS, reverse cameo look, full steps.....why isn't this in my collection? LOL I don't think it's a proof either, in this year the proof fields are mirrored. If you want to sell or trade this coin, please send me a PM!

Is there really a full steps designation for lincoln cents?
gorgeous mint struck coin...proof would have mirror like surfaces
on this coin you can see flow lines, making it a high MS grade(GEM)65+
Yours is probably MS 66 or higher...congrats!

Thanks for your opinions, I graded this at the shop an MS-66 and put a 4 dollar price on it...it sat for two weeks, so I brought it home. I might just send this to a TPG when I can get a cheapie, I would like to know the "official" grade opinion ! The only reason I mentioned the steps Atlashealth is that many Mint State LMC's have mushy, ill-defined steps- and this one does not. I suppose maybe it is just a matter of time before a Full Step designation is given to LMC's. Sorry BadThad, what I buy I have thus far kept- this beauty is not going anywhere soon. I think there was another one nearly as nice, if I can find it-you'll be the first to know. |

MS-67RD for sure. Don't know if I could go much higher. Seems the dies are worn? Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't see much detail in the beard, it's just a mass. The hair is lacking definition as well. The steps on the reverse do appear to all be there. There does seem to be a little definition lacking to either side though. It's a very nice looking LMC nonetheless. Could have come out of a mint set? I have to agree with the consensus though, it's definitely not a proof. How did you come by the coin if I may ask? |
