A friend of mine sent me a text saying "check out that reverse!" with a link to an ebay listing. Clicked the link and this showed up. Looked at the time and it was ending in three minutes, so had to act. Decided I wanted it and bid fairly high winning at just $29. It's hard to say exactly what it is struck through, but it is some sort of thin sheet of metal. My first thought was a gum wrapper, and that's still my best guess. Next time I'm out at a coin shop with a spec I'll have it checked out to see what it is made of. The last photo, with the black background, is the seller's photo so certainly wasn't something anyone could miss. Weight is 6.32g and it is restricted to the reverse with very little on the rim and nothing on the edge. 1948 Washington quarter mint error - struck through retained metal      |

I think you did very well to get this coin, I would think it is worth a lot more. Very cool looking.

That is neat looking! great buy. Looks like a long die crack going though A and snaking around to the west wing?

Thanks all! It is pretty neat-o nifty looking. And no, a magnet didn't seem to do anything, and yes, it does have a quite long die crack extending from the rim below the A of DOLLAR all the way to the top of the right wing.

Any consideration of it being a post mint, like a liquid metal? The flaking/fold over has me asking - you can see the loss that has occured from beak to ED.

Thanks DOCC, been wondering when the conversation would move to possible PMD. My biggest concern is the edge where the metal and fields meet. I would expect the metal to be pretty flat there from the strike, but certainly is a little ridge. |

I hear ya, just have a tough time comprehending how something so thin would fuse to the coin from a strike. Guess it could have always been part of the planchet.

TB next Monday afternoon they will release me from Hospital. We will finish an business broke by my heart and please do not sell this coin I will take.
For me the superior part have no attraction, but bottom the Die Crack will be another one and the bigger on the same way I have I think other 3 coins. Verry interesting because those Dies come from same Hub with same Hub Doubbling but different Dies who Crack on the same region.
Fascinating (for me).

Great to hear they are finally setting you free! Stay well and healthy, and we shall finish our business when you are ready. I will have this coin, as I won't be satisfied until I can get a better diagnosis on what the metal is. And yes, the die crack is fascinating.
