This cent was not struck THROUGH a split planchet; it was struck ON a split planchet. The struck-in piece of copper is a nice bonus.
Error coin writer and researcher.

Dang, I was just re-reading this thread and caught that exact error! Thanks Mike, I mis-spoke on that bit and will change the text to read correctly. Downside of reading and typing fast when busy I suppose, but thanks for the correction as it matters.
