Hello I was weighing my gold scraps and was putting this coin in because it's damaged but I was wondering if any of you know what's going on with is? It looks like someone made it into a necklace or something but I don't know why they'd use such a small coin or why it's on top and bottom if connected to a chain or bracelet. Have you guys seen this on other coins and was it due to someone making it into a piece of jewelry?

I believe it had a hinged clasp on it at some point. Looks like the hinge was below the date and the catch, now broken, was above the "1." This would enable it to be worn as a small broach, or even on a man's lapel. Just a guess.

that makes sense. If it was a pin the solder mark would only be on one edge.
