Hi All,

This is another coin my grandfather collected for me and I received in 1977 when he passed. I received it in a 2x2 where it has been since I received it.
I was having some trouble taking photos so I've included several different ones that I thought would be the most helpful. I had heck with the reverse side. Yikes!
I included the last two photos to show how bright they are.

Assuming it's genuine then it's a harshly cleaned piece with AU+ details. The fact that your grandfather gave it to you should make it worth far more than the coin itself.

Hi,

Thanks guys! I suspected it might have been cleaned.

Question. AU details means it has Almost Uncirculated details but, since it was cleaned how much does that reduce the value by? Is there a percentage reduction or does it invalidate it all together?

And yes, since grandpa gave it to me I don't plan on selling. Just would like to have a value for my records.

Sharon, you are correct. It is an Almost Uncirculated coin that was damaged by an improper cleaning. It is a common date so you can figure that it has no collector other than a little over it's silver content.
Melt value today would be just under $19 but cull Morgans usually bring around $25 currently.

Might want to check vamworld.com to check for the specialty VAM varieties (Wow vams, hit list 40, hot 50, Top 100) of the 1878-S. PS, not a long-nock variety
Other than that, with what others said above...

Hi Mrwhatisit,

I will do that! I'm (probably, obviously) disappointed with the cleaning issue so if there is a silver lining I'm game. Lol

I'm so glad each of you are here to help us young pups learn about coins and I'm grateful you each take time to weigh in with honesty and willing to share your knowledge so selflessly. It's awesome!

Y'all have a wonderful New Years.

I'm betting grandpap pulled this from circulation. probably dirty and he cleaned and polished it to shine it up. it is a common year.

there are quite a few VAMS that have decent value. I'm not into them but you can find the markers for them here if you want to take the time. other than that the coin would have a value for its silver but priceless as an heirloom
