I don't think it can be a Cud without a corresponding lack of features on the obverse? |

What does the edge look like there? Seems like the rim is subtly thinner at V DEI.

Could be a Retained Struck Through or a Lamination.
Errers and Varietys.

There appears to be a groove at the rim over D to A. The extra metal could be a folded-over lamination error, or a piece gouged out by something while in circulation. Have a good look there; if it doesn't have a scrape mark, then it's probably a lamination.

It also looks to me like a sliver got scrapped of between the D & A and deposited there after the strike

Not a Cud. I think okie is close.......a copper shard of some sort which was struck in place.....maybe off rim as okie said. |

Probably either a retained lamination or a little Rim Fin that has folded over. Thanks for looking all, the piece in question doesn't look to be scrapped off of the reverse, I still believe it is off another coin. I've avoided playing with it in case it falls off. One more pic in different light.  |
