Back in 2021 I purchased a coin that was graded by NGC and I felt the grading was incorrect. NGC fairly resolved that situation. You can read about that instance here: http://goccf.com/t/394916I purchased a coin from a buy and sell listing that was graded in a PCGS holder. The coin didn't look great but the pictures were poor and the seller forewarned me that the coin was not returnable and that it was graded by PCGS and therefore I would own it. Usually that would cause me to pass but the price was really good and I trusted that PCGS would grade the coin accurately. I figured all else I was getting the coin at below greysheet so I had a potential upside. I got the coin and was instantly sorry I purchased it. The coin was actually in better shape than the grade, but it had ugly black spots and looked lifeless. I contacted the seller and we both agreed that we had a made a deal ( I got it below greysheet and the deal was final). I was going to break it out and put it acetone but just put it away and left it alone. Recently I started selling off some of my duplcates and the coin came up. Its still ugly so I decided to send it in for an appearance review at PCGS, to see if they do the same thing that NGC did.

Coin was shipped last week and is already on my account as of January 1. 2024. This is the coin: The black/green spot at 11 o clock is what worries me. Since NGC took care of their appearance review, I am expecting PCGS to do the same. I'll keep you all informed as it goes through the process.

Not really a looker is it?
What would happen if you dipped this in one of the acid type cleaners? Could it be resubmitted after the dip?

What would happen if you dipped this in one of the acid type cleaners? Could it be resubmitted after the dip? It is not a looker, but it could be, the coin is sharp but the ugly black spots kill it. I could dip it, but the cost for an appearance review is $25 while a submission is around $45. So taking a chance first with a review. I could also do NGC which would be my next choice for a conservation and regrade. These are all options. I paid mid $100 for the coin, so there some potential to not lose money if I can get it conserved and it keeps the straight grade.

It definitely looks like it would benefit from conservation. The only question is whether PCGS will do it for you, or whether you'll have to pay to get it done.

The black spots on the obverse are perhaps forgivable; the black-green blotch on the reverse is not.
The question would have to be, "Did the damage occur before or after it was slabbed". If the coin has always looked like this, or if it's a provable example of coin doctoring that looked fine when originally submitted but the doctoring has since disintegrated, then their guarantee ought to fully hold - they graded an unworthy coin. If that's just natural degradation of the coin while it's been in the holder, due to poor storage, then it is questionable if PCGS are obligated to do anything; PCGS do not guarantee that coins in their slabs won't degrade if stored in adverse conditions.
What you and PCGS would need is photographic evidence of what the coin looked like when it was originally graded.

PCGS has the coin and emailed me yesterday stating that there was a problem with my order but no other specific information, I tried calling but the Queue was filled. I'll try early today.

Just got notification that the coin was graded. Its still the same number, but it says now that its in am NFC slab which it wasn't before, it was in a Gen 6 slab with the code matrix. I'm hoping the PCGS conserved it, but no pictures or other details. I'll wait till I get it back.

Very interesting. Would PCGS conserve it without contacting you for payment first or is that what the appearance review is supposed to take care of?

Looking up the cert shows the same grade. Am I missing something?
