PCGS - Despite its robust mintage of 12,150,000, the 1888-O Morgan dollar can still captivate. After years of storage against sulfur-rich paper roll ends, this example achieved a geometric toning pattern with just the right amount of thin-film thickness. Few ever strike the balance of bold color and intact luster, but this one did — just in time for Toner Tuesday. In PCGS MS66+, this example sold for $20,562.

That is indeed a beautiful coin. I prefer my silver blast white - but would easily make an exception for this stunner.

Very, very handsome coin. A gorgeous obverse strike. That may very well be the nicest hair Ive seen on a 1888 MSD. The hair around the ears is so very impressive as is the ear itself. This is one of those unusual '88s where the obverse strike is even cleaner then the reverse.

A terrific coin and I havn't even mentioned the toning yet, which is a work of art.

One of the most impressive MSD's Ive seen and maybe under-graded.

If indeed it was the end coin in an old paper roll, as mentioned, I could see it developing one-sided toning like this from contact with the paper. Sort of like Morgan dollars stored long-term in original bags; the portion of the coin against the canvas material can be spectacularly toned, sometimes only in a crescent, but the rest of the coin can be untoned.

Rainbow toning
Pity it is a bit irregular.

I reason that it would be stupid (due to the value), to rainbow tone it on one side only, using a carefully temperature controlled hot plate, and carefully timed exposure, but it could be possible.
Whatever the case, be it temperature of chemistry,
it has obviously been exposed on one side only,
perhaps in a drawer made of wood, that has an active natural resin in the wood.

For me, the toning adds to eye appeal but not extra value,
because delicate rainbow toning is unstable, and an item such as this needs to be in an air tight enclosure to keep the toning as you see it now.

Question:
Would the slab be sufficiently air tight in the long term ?
