Bent, years ago, I asked the same question about these and got no real answer. Over time, I came to the conclusion that it's a combination of a deteriorated die and a plating issue, where it sinks in the center of the letters. Sometimes you will see it raised too, in the same area and think that is due to the plating issue. I've only seen this happen with zincolns.

Yes I am. But something's I haven't figured out yet but I will. I never collected coins until I joined this site. 2 years ago. Makecents Thanks for input I won't post these anymore .Bent.
