Verdigris-On-A-Nickel?
I was checking out this nickel on ebay. Overall, I like the look of the coin, except for these spots on the reverse. Is this staining, debris, or verdigris? Is it treatable, removable, permanent?

Impossible to say with certainty what these spots are, but I'd guess it's unlikely that all evidence of them could be removed.

I'd think VC would take care of it but you'd likely have a stain, noticeably darker area.

Carbon spots. Can not be removed without damage to the coin.

I see a green spot, that's verdigris for certain. Normally the black part is terminal corrosion and it cannot be removed without damaging the surfaces.

However, as Tunnioc pointed out, it could also be BOTH a carbon spot and verdigris. I've seen verdigris form inside those spots on nickels. Without seeing it in hand, I cannot say if the spots are all corrosion or a mix of carbon/corrosion. Either way, it doesn't really matter because these types are permanent.

VC will improve those spots and halt the corrosion process but it will not fully remove them.

As is tradition, the frog has pronounced:

A pity, as it is otherwise a relatively nice 1942-D, presently at a fair price.

Anyway, thanks for the advice, guys. I am still very much a beginner at coin conservation, and at identifying the various chemical reactions.

I would move on, and find one without those spots.

Well, it sold for $23, which is more than I would have been willing to pay anyway. Pretty remarkable the prices that big sellers get for coins.
