Hello, since it's 22 carats, is it ok to store gold Krugerrand in a tube without a capsule to protect them from scratches? I store my 24 carats coins in capsules as it's absolutely necessary but for Krugerrand is there a risk not to use capsules? I want to save space and not using capsules makes a huge difference. Thank you!

Coins can rub against others in a tube.

I known that. That's why I'm asking if, even though it's 22 carats, there's a risk of scratches. I heard many times that since 22 carats gold is made to be circulated it doesn't risk damage in a tube.

If these are going to be bullion coins and not collector coins a few scratches are not going to matter.

Yes it will be bullion coins. Knowing coin shops, I'm just afraid that they use minor scratches to offer a lower price.

I believe the coin surfaces are protected by their rims when stored in a tube, especially with modern low relief coins. For what it is worth, there are people who store proof coins in tubes with no problem; the rims do their job. Also, we can get rolls of uncirculated coins from the Mint, they all look great.

I was not aware of the rim protecting the surface. Do you mean that the relief of the rim is higher than the surface relief?

Yes the rim is a little higher to protect the design surface. They should be okay in tubes. However if you are going to take the coins out frequently to look at them just be careful, don't let them bang on each other and wear soft gloves in my opinion

Should be safe enough for storage if you're careful about putting them in the tube. And it wouldn't hurt to use a filler on top of the coins so they can't shift or rattle inside the tube when you move the tube around.

Thank you. I already put the filler so that coins can't move when it's not full. Are the gloves necessary if I don't touch the coin with the nails? Oil from the skin isn't supposed to damage gold, that's not sensitive to fat. Am I wrong?

I do not like using gloves because they make me clumsier than I already am.

As long as you handle them by the edge you should be okay.

In effect these are bullion coins, so having scratches shouldn't lower the value, their value is basically the precious metal component but every time you put a coin in or take it out, it will hit another coin so in time the coins will go from (exampel) MS69 to MS65. Hence as these are bullion, it shouldn't make a difference but it might.

I really appreciate the answers. If some of you stack Krugerrands, do you use capsules or only tubes?
Another question: have you heard about the new security features on gold Krugerrands? I read that a tiny "Krugerrand" word is now engraved on the mountain in the background landscape. My LCS wasn't aware of this.

Coin stores will cite any excuse under the sun to offer you less for your coin. Minor scratches don't matter much with bullion coins. Just avoid heavily scratched ones unless of course you can get it at a great price!
