For some reason in 1889 it was decided to enlarge the Jubilee bust of Queen Victoria on the shilling. Very interesting!

There are two varieties of the French 1965 Half-Franc. They can be distinguished by the size of the lettering on the obverse: I don't know why there are two varieties, but I imagine that the ones with the small lettering were the first to be minted when this new coin replaced the aluminium-bronze 50-centimes. Perhaps the obverse die was created with the same hub used for the 1F and 5F coins, and after a few months in circulation the lettering on these smaller coins started to get faint, so the Monnaie de Paris decided to increase the size of the letters. All post-1965 half-francs have the larger lettering. Incidentally, I've never seen separate mintage figures for Large Letter and Small Letter 1965 half-francs in any catalog, but both versions are very common.

Thanks for showing that one NumisRob. I have those coins, but didn't have pictures yet. I think you might be spot on with the reason for changing them.

Hmm - I wonder if a design change but same value from different dates would count
