I found a 1983 penny with no mint mark and gold in color. I looked it up on Coin snap and it showed a value of $86, and I checked it over 10x to make sure I wasn't dreaming. If someone can tell me if I have something of value or was Coin snap wrong. This penny has me puzzled and wanting to know if it's worth more than a penny......

To CCF, Capricorn7! Coin Snap is wrong. You won't get 86 dollars for that. I don't think you'd get more than face value for it, since it's circulated.

I would not trust any AI controlled grading sites like coin snap - 99.99999% of the time it is very wrong and point a collector in the wrong direction.

Capricorn7,

Looks like a brass plated coin: https://koinpro.tripod.com/Brass.htm
Being your coin is circulated I see little if any premium.

1c best case, 1c worst case.

An $86 value is -theoretically- for the very best of the very best condition. Out of the billions made (7,752,355,000), the one.

It's also bogus. PCGS' Price Guide for MS66 (the highest grade they list, with six known) is $6.

no mint mark is YouTube clickbait and also bunk. Except for the 2017 cent (to celebrate the 225th anniversary of the founding of the Philadelphia Mint), no cents minted in Philadelphia have a mint mark.

So what you have is one of 7 3/4 billion circulated cents minted in Philly.

to the CCF As in John1s link, this is a brass plated coin from the mint. An improper alloy. It would have a small premium, but not $86.

Normal color variation for copper plated cents. As the copper plating baths dissolve zinc from the planchets, the color will lighten.
