I found this in a pile, reverse side up and said to myself....that coin is beat up bad. I flip it over and it's a 1922 and I do not see the mint mark.

Maybe in all that black gunk the mint mark is there, maybe it's not there. In the end the coin is pretty beat up. Should I play with verdicare and try to give this coin some dignity back? Or do you see a mint mark in all of that?

Thanks
Dan

Yep, a pretty circulated coin there

I think I see a trace of a D mintmark down there, and either pure acetone or verdi-care should work off that dark gunk to confirm what you have...

Give it a soak in pure Acetone and let's know later on.

You might try first soaking it in distilled water for a couple days, to possibly soften that caked-on dirt. Acetone would be a good next step. Given the appearance of the reverse, it might be a weak D.

I see the D under the surface residue. Soak in distilled water and use a tooth pick (while under water) to work away the crud. If necessary, move to either isopropanol (IPA) or acetone next but ALWAYS try water first. The coin has already been cleaned and it's damaged, you have nothing to lose. If it were me, I'd probably just use hot, running tap water to try to clear it.

From my understanding of the die pairs for this date, the D prettty much has to be there.

I find the 1922-D coin fascinating. It has such a story to it... Denver was the only mint, it has a relatively low mintage, and the wonderful "No D" variety made it seem like Philly actually did mint some.

I gladly keep any 1922 cent that comes my way, no matter what it looks like.
