Thought I'd try one more that I like a good bit. Fairly low mintage of 401,000. Seller's pics. Only issue I have is the mottled appearance of the dark area on the left of both the obverse and reverse. Is this evidence of a cleaning attempt? Coin appears to be around an AU55 to me. Thoughts?

I'll say EF-45, perhaps AU-50. Not a fan.

Surfaces are mark free and the coin is extremely well struck. Appears very original and I like the look. AU 55/58. My only question is why isn't it slabbed. If the seller offers a no questions asked return go for it if the price is in your comfort zone.

I would be at AU53 and I like the older skin on the coin. Some may like them flashy but I prefer the mottled toning that only time can give. Hard to give an opinion on cleaning but I don't see anything obvious.

This particular coin is 1841-O, WB-6, Large O with R-4 = very scarce (population estimated at 76-200).
This is the only use of this obverse die and only use of this reverse die.
I think it's a very nice coin and would give it AU-55 to maybe an AU-58 straight grade.

to me it looks like the coin probably had a bunch of organic crud on the coin and it probably was acetoned and this is whats left. I would not consider the coin cleaned and at least AU55

So, GMS5, I gather that the Reverse die crack running from the stem down through the F to the dentils is diagnostic. I don't have the books for this series. I'm still in the hunt - auction ends tonight.

I didn't exactly pass, CF - I just set my max bid and that's what I was willing to pay. The WB-6 is fairly rare, but others wanted it more than I did. Nature of the beast. Went for $920+. There's always another one...
