Harshly cleaned, scrubbed even, based on what I can see on the obverse surfaces. I can't see the surfaces on the reverse side.
A shame as the base coin has a lot of detail remaining.
IMO it's been badly degraded to a bullion stacker coin.

I am pretty sure I have the least Morgan expertise here so sorry for the stupid question but why is the details grade AU? To me this would be UNC details, harshly cleaned as I can't see what details are missing. Because I have little expertise in Morgans, the few I collect are TPG other than stuff for bullion purposes so I know I am wrong but can't see what is missing. Thanks in advance for any help here.

Agreed, AU Details, cleaned.
Errers and Varietys.

Quote: stupid question but why is the details grade AU? The grade is AU based on the amount of wear on the coin. "Details" points out that there is a issue with the coin, in this case it was scrubbed or cleaned leaving fine scratches on the surfaces.

@ IndianGoldEagle. Sorry if I wasn't clear. I know how grading works I just can't tell what on the Morgan is missing. Everything seems like an UNC Morgan in terms of the wear. Or is it that harsh cleaning would automatically downgrade a Morgan to AU with the idea being that harsh cleaning always causes wear? If so, I have still seem some Morgan UNC details grades with harsh cleaning as the cause so it is confusing me a bit.

Quote: Everything seems like an UNC Morgan in terms of the wear. Or is it that harsh cleaning would automatically downgrade a Morgan to AU it can be a real challenge to differentiate between a high AU coin and MS. these coins are referred to as sliders. add in grading by photo and then a cleaning on top of that. it is possible the coin is UNC details. the 82(S) are known for sharp strikes so the area that stood out immediately to me were the wheat grass seeds. they both look like they have seen some light wear. I don't think there would be much a difference between those 2 grade assignments

@panzaldi. Thank you very much. I see now what you mean about the seeds although I don't yet have the skill to distinguish such details on this coin by myself. Yes, not knowing much about the Morgans I don't know which ones have traditionally sharp strikes and which not - as I said quite naieve about these :( Its great there are so many people who are expert on different coins in these forums. Thanks for the help everyone.

manosgerms, keep in mind many contributors here own their own LCS or have decades of experience collecting and/or grading. stay with it, the more you pick up here the better you will be able to assess. I suggest picking a single series (maybe favorite) and learn everything you can about that series. there are articles online that can be searched and great books out there. folks here can recommend them if you ask
