recent pick up... I think this coin may have been artificially colored? Or could it look like this naturally?

I think you may be right about the toning. Detail on the eagle looks to be F-12. What happened to the letter in the inscription?

echizento.. the missing letter is actually there, under magnification/correctly angled light just very very worn. I think it must have been Struck Through Grease or something like that.

If the photo is accurate on color, it may just be environmental exposure at some point. The missing letters could be a filled die.
As for grade, I suspect the coloration is hiding some details, but look at the eagle's breast and there's detail left of that wing tip, which is a high point of the design. A weak tail strike is common, so I'll say VF35-EF40.

I think your assessment is right on gettingbrowned, I believe this coin to be artificially toned to hide a long ago cleaning. Having said that, this coin would be a text book VF35. Just slightly too much wear to command an XF40. Also as DVCollector has pointed out, I believe the coin has some environmental exposure as well, especially the obverse.
