I'm no expert but I own about 50 slabbed MS Morgan dollars in various grades. They are mostly pcgs but quite a few ncg, anacs and now a couple cacg graded coins.
The two cacg coins look undergraded (by standards I'm used to) by at least a point. I noticed the last couple of pcgs graded dollars I bought are very conservatively graded as well.
Has anyone else noticed much more conservative grading lately and do you think it has anything to do with the new cacg grading service coming online?

No way you could have enough statistical evidence to back this up.

No it's just an impression. I look at a lot of slabbed dollars and I just wondered if anyone else has noticed PCGS has become more conservative and CACG is extremely conservative. It's impossible to prove since it's all subjective anyway. Just something I've wondered about.

I say only rare coins should be slabbed just to preserve their designation. What really is the purpose of slabbing common coins in common condition?

I prefer raw coins myself. If I'm buying a more expensive coin I like the third party grading just to help confirm authenticity and a second opinion on grade.
I plan to pass my collection on to my family and I think it will be easier for them to get a fair price for a slabbed coin than a raw one if they go to sell it.
I ended up with 50 or so slabbed Morgan's just because that's how I found the ones I needed. I have 450+ raw Morgan's as well in my collection. I prefer to buy raw as I can find better buys that way.

I agree that slabbing a G or VG common coin doesn't make sense. I usually slab if the coin needs conservation and is above 250 or more dollars in value. What guidelines do others use?

Ive never sent one in for grading but I have a few raw coins I think would grade very high that I plan to send someday. I think $250 break off sounds about right to me.
If it's a lower priced but harder to verify variety I'd send it in for verification. For example I have a heck of a time seeing the overdate 80/79 dollars. The 79 is very very faint. I like TPG to verify varieties like that.

I think this is an interesting question - I have thought about this myself. I just got some Morgan's back from PCGS and they were as expected other than one that came back details (which I cannot figure out). I have read, for what it is worth, that NGC has tightened up a bit.

I can tell you for world moderns that PCGS has basically not changed at all. I put through around 30 world coins and every single one graded at or better than I was expecting. For Japanese meiji and Chinese (Republic and modern) issues - I am just putting through a couple of batches of 20 coins and will let you know if there is a change but I really don't expect them to have especially for the meijis - right now there is almost a half grade average between PCGS and NGC for meiji coin grading (PCGS is the more conservative) and so I don't expect PCGS to get any stricter.
Of course this is to be expected as CAC currently do NOT grade world coins of any sort as far as I am aware, however its a good benchmark for comparing with changes in the morgan and other us spaces.
