OK, Here's one of two Morgans for you guys to see today. It's got wear, I can even see that now. Above the eye and the ear, on the cheek, at the point of the neck etc. Let me guess maybe a 29-33? Don't laugh at my guess please. LOL, except I'm laughing at myself, because I don't exactly know what range the numbers follow.

I would say this one was in fine to good condition which is still pretty good considering on PCGS website they say a VF is worth 620.00 it is definately one of them I would send with the 55 penny. this coin could be VF or above I am just not very good at grading circulated coins liike this, but still I would send it to get graded and authenticated it is a very good coin to have and I mean VERY GOOD one to have.

Hi Bryan, Thanks for looking at it, and offering your valued opinion on its grade. If these were mine to keep, I'd probably have them all authenticated. I looked at Uncles list again, and he's got 56 Morgans before 1900, that I'll be putting up for sale on ebay. Then there are 25 more between 1900 and 1935. I want to make as much money as I can for him, and have to figure if it would be cost effective. It will probably be so for some and not for others. I haven't seen them all yet. Hopefully with help here, I'll be able to figure out which ones to send out. I'm waiting till next week like Susan suggested, and I'll put a group of them in a box and ship them out. I'm taking pics of quarters this week and will start listing them on Monday. This is a BIG job. But at least I'm not packing up lamps and table like usual. LOL. Thanks again Bryan!

alliegirl I did some ebay surfing for 1893CC morgans just for the reason I stated that I am no good at grading circulated coins like yours and I saw this one which is pretty close to the one you have there, it is graded VF30 By PCGS (who is usually very strict on grading). Here is a link to it and you be the judge, But this is DEFINATELY one to send out to be graded if nothing else to make sure its authentic because this coin being worth so much money it is copied alot also, anyhow here is the link http://cgi.ebay.com/1893-CC-PCGS-VF...cmdZViewItem I would say looking at both side by side (well pulling both up on the computer side by side) that yours could be this grade or atleast very close to it. Which could be worth upwards of 1,000.00 dollars if authenticated and graded this grade.

VF-30, maybe VF-25 these days. It's almost identical to the 1893CC graded VF-30 by PCGS in my collection. This one is a keeper. 1893CCs are the the second-most rare Carson City Morgans in the series (behind only 1889CC, slightly ahead of the 79CC in demand). This one should definitely be graded by one of the top grading companies (ANACS, NGC, PCGS). There's two listed on ebay right now graded VF-30 by PCGS; start or Buy It Now prices are $895 and $690 which are near Book Value (little above actually at BV $560 to $620 [PCGS Price Guide]), so these coins might not sell although they might go for these higher values since PCGS, NGC, and ANACS graded 1893CC coins are not commonly available. Other PCGS VF-30 93CCs have been selling for $495 to $595. I keep track of 93CC Morgans on ebay through My Favorite Searches to keep track of the market. Many or most raw 93CCs, 89CC, and 79CCs listed on ebay are problem coins, mostly cleaned.

Presuming the Morgan hasn't been cleaned (it doesn't appear so from the images), this needs to be graded and encapsulated.

Alice, good find!

Now to read what the others think.

Alice, now that I've read the rest of the thread, I didn't realize you're talking about a collection of considerable size. If it's at all possible, you might want to get one of our Morganphiles here on CCF to take an eyeball look at the whole collection. It'll save you a lot of time, money, electrons, and heartache trying to get us to give an honest appraisal via images of the collection, one by one; there's too much lost in the imaging process. With this number of Morgans, you potentially could be talking about quite a large sum of money, value-wise and it would be unfair to you and your Uncle for us to judge such a collection electronically. They need to be appraised first-hand by one of us (who I trust) or by a professional coin dealer (who may or may not be trustworthy); if you know any dealers in your neck of the woods, run their names through us and if any of us have any experience with him/her, we'd be in a better position to advise you. Some banks and investment firms keep a list of coin appraisers who have been "vetted"; I used to be one with A.G. Edwards. Problem with hiring an appraiser is that it'll cost money.

I don't know where you live, but we MorganHeads are scattered around the country and there may be one near you. I'm in the Arizona desert in the middle of nowhere, so it would be almost a miracle if you were in even the next state over although I'd be willing to travel just to eyeball a large collection of Morgans ("Have Morgans, Will Travel" - apologies to Paladin ).

It takes a long time to develop grading skills, so if I were you, I wouldn't try to tackle this project all on your own. Also, with a collection of this size, listing them on ebay before somebody fairly knowledgeable on Morgans (and Peace dollars which you also have) takes a look at them. One piece of advice: do not try to sell them as a Collection Lot on ebay; you won't get anywhere near what they would be worth if sold individually.

Maybe if you could list the dates and mints, we could sort the potentially good dates from the more common coins. Use this forum (Coin Grading Practice) so we would know where to find the thread.

Morning Fred, I'm so impressed with your knowledge of these Morgans. Thank you for the links, I'll head in that direction later today and check it out. Let me know if there is someone in my area, Schenectady, NY. I don't have all the Morgans in my hands yet, only about 10. Am working on the quarters right now, taking pics. I didn't want to be responsible for all of Uncles coins at once. I'll be checking for your reply. It sure would help to know which of the dollars should be sent for certification. Thanks, Alice

Schenectady. Incredible. I was born in Troy, grew up in a small village in Delaware County, but maintained contact with the larger Capital Region since I had several relatives work at GE. My father went to RPI, my mother and sister-in-law went to Russell Sage, my brother, sister, brother-in-law, brother-in-law's brother, nephew, and niece all went to RPI (I went to Cornell). My aging mother is 91, has Alzheimers' and is in Stage 6, but living in an Alzheimer's home in Cohoes. My sister and her husband live in Averill Park, just retired from the State three years ago, and I only departed NYS for the life of a fulltime RVer now in Arizona. Upstate NY is really bad for my arthritis which is why I'm here. I am intimately familiar with the area or, at least I was. I won't be back into the area for at least a couple years for medical reasons, not to mention the cost of gas. I probably won't even attend my mother's funeral when the inevitable happens soon.

There IS (or was) a very good and reputable brick and mortar coin and stamp shop in Watervliet: Uncle Sam's Coins and Stamps on 3rd Ave, where 3rd and 1st merge together; his shop is sandwiched in the flatiron type intersection I believe. I don't know if he's still in business - he was a one-man operation and I don't believe he ever got online. If he's still open, I would recommend him. He never steered me wrong nor tried to take advantage of anyone I ever heard.

Contrapositively, there ARE a few less-than-ethical coin dealers in the greater Albany area who might try to take advantage of you. For example, I know one who would deride your collection as having little value, then would offer you $500 for the lot "just to take it off your hands". The 1893CC is worth at least than alone.

Hi Fred, OMG that's wild! You're from the area too! My dad worked for GE as a turbin winder for 35 years. He passed away 2 years ago, but mom is 84 and still cooking! In fact she just got a job 3 days a week at the local head start center. I just retired from the state 6 weeks ago. I worked as an RN in the state psychiatric center next door to Albany Medical Center for 21 years. However I just got a new job as Taxi Driver for mom. LOL Sorry to hear about you mom. That Alzheimers is such a sad illness, and they really don't know the cause. I worked private duty for a 53 year old woman who was afflicted. She and her husband were so active. They even had their own Harleys and would take road trips together. They had a hugh home on an island in Niskayuna, and they had enough money to keep her right there till she passed at 59. Sure enough, I looked in the phone book, and Uncle Sams coins and stamps are listed at 621 Third St. in Watervliet. After I get done listing the quarters, I'll have Uncle Jim drop off the rest of the dollars and I'll call him up. Perhaps he can give me an idea on which ones should be certified before putting them up for sale on ebay. Thank you so much for your suggestions "neighbor". It's very much appreciated! Alice

Heh. I was born at Albany Medical Center, grew up in Altamont, and went to school in Guilderland.

Oh WOW Dave! Another "neighbor"!! I love to take the grandkids up to the Altamont orchards in the fall to pick apples, and pick up pumpkins. And of course the Altamont Fair is a must every summer!! Am actually in Rotterdam, not far from the Guilderland line. You must have spent some time hiking through Thatcher Park on the trails. Love looking for fossils in the rock up there. Nice to know you're from the area too!!

On a clear day you can see Vermont, but this wasn't a clear day.

Hey, Look at you Dave!! Great pic!! Actually all of your pictures are beautiful!! Makes me want to jump in the car and take a 20 minute drive!! LOL Usually this time of year there would still be some snow up there, but I doubt it this year. I didn't have to shovel the driveway, not even once. We'd get an inch or two, and then it would melt away. It's been a warm and dry winter, except for a couple of days in a row where it got down to the teens. Where are you located now? Or maybe you're still around the area. Not sure. The view up in Thatcher is spectacular isn't it? Nice picnic grounds, and trails too. I remember reading in the paper that they're going to spend this summer removing the old inground pool, and replacing it with an even larger one. Thanks for sharing the pics. :) Alice

After looking at those nice pictures of home, all I can say is that it might be nice now, but give it a few days, it'll be white again! When I was back east last summer, I left here on 20 April when it was 95F, arrived in NYS about 28 April into temps in the 20s and it was snowing. It didn't stop snowing until sometime in JUNE! That left two months of summer before winter started again. When I left in early September, it was in the low 40s.

Back to Uncle Sam's Coin shop, I do not know if it's the same guy running it as I knew it before. He was elderly ten years ago, so check out the shop first to see if there's been a change in ownership. If it's a much younger person, then the old man retired or sold out. You'll have to "get a feel" for a new owner's ethical standards.

Dave, if you're still in the area, you might want to check out Uncle Sam's and get a sense of the shop's ethics if there's a new guy. Go Morgan hunting - you seem to know the series pretty well.

Unfortunately, I'm in Atlantic City now. There's darn few dealers around here, and what's worse there's no hills.

I've spent a couple years in NJ, mostly while in uniform (first with the Boy Scouts, but mostly with the Army - Ft. Dix and Ft. Monmouth). It's got a lot to offer: nice beaches, the Pine Barrens, Cape May, Brigantine Natl Wildlife Refuge, and a lot of people and congested roads. There used to be some hills around the Morristown - Mendham area, but they may have torn them down for some urban renewal project. It's been a few years (15) since I've been there.
