1878 CC Morgan - Die Cracks On Reverse?

Hey I want to welcome you to the forum as well and to say that you have definately come to the right place with a morgan question. I also want to state I have a coin that looks the same with a die crack going almosy all the way around the top of the letters on the reverse but from what I could find out it is just basically nothing, mine wasnt a 78CC and this may not be true for that series. I dont have any of the higher priced CC coins as of yet so I cant compare to tell you, but alot of others have plenty of all of them and they know what they are talking about when it comes to morgans so they could be alot clearer on what this actually is on your 78CC.



As a matter of fact the 7/8 TF that you mentioned was my coin and the one I was refering to up top.



Also on the grading, I am not the best to tell you about that either but I am trying to improve my skills. I do want to tell you that is a very beautiful coin and I would grade it at MS-64-MS-65 and it doesn't look cleaned to me, but....like I said my skills arent developed yet and this is my opinion on coins I have here in hand comparing with. But none are a 78CC

Hi keh and welcome to the forum! You'll find a fair number of Morganphiles here, myself included.

VAM-wise, there are only a few Morgan VAMs which significantly increase the value of any particular date/mint mark. I'm no VAM expert, but I know that die cracks are relatively common among Morgans and may or may not constitute a variety. I don't have the complete list of more than 3000 Morgan and Peace VAMs, but I did not find die cracks among the 1878CC list nor does Bowers Red Book of Morgans list any die cracks among the four or five "significant" VAMs he lists.

This is a nice-looking Morgan without a lot of bag marks, but the few digs it does have look rather deep and will keep the grade down. The scratch on Liberty's cheek and the one under the Eagle's right wing might cause this to be graded MS-63 or lower, especially if there are lighter marks on the coin which don't show up in the images. I don't believe it would go as high as MS-64, but it could go as low as MS-61. In any instance, I would encourage you to submit it to one of the top grading services (ANACS, NGC, or PCGS) for grading and encapsulation. The Morgan is not only worth it financially, but should be preserved for future generations.

Oh! its still a huge coin in my book, I have close to completion a full sett of morgan mint/date set and all of mine are MS-64-MS-64DPL because I am on disability and though I love the coin and the hobby I just weighed the options and decided I could buy 3 MS-64's or 1 MS-65, so I went with the 64's. I will after completed probably update some of them when I am able to do so but I am very happy with my MS-64 collection. The 1878CC is one that I havent been able to aquire yet and it may be one that I cant afford in 64 like a few of the other higher priced coins, so in their place I buy what I can afford and plan on upgrading when the set is complete so I will have the set done and can save up for a better grade. You have a beautiful coin there and would be a great addition to your collection even if its graded in the lower scale at MS-61 and would make almost any morgan collector I know happy to have it (unless they just have money to burn). I am eager to see your other questions and coins you have in your collection, and like was already said you are among alot of morgan collectors here so you fit right in with all of us. I am also a new collector (having only been collecting about a year now) and have learned alot from the month or so I have been a member of this forum and know if you stick around you can to.
