Black Spear Through US $5 Bill - Coin Community Forum

A1agrl Valued Member United States 170 Posts	Posted 05/09/2024 1:54 pm I have a $5 bill with a black line descending from the top of the bill to the bottom. Under the microscope the line is beneath all the upper inking and is under the serial number. So it had to have been there first. I have attached a two photos. Please give me your thoughts as to what this is. Unfortunately, I am unable with my scope to send a full image of the bill at this time. Thank you. Report this Post to the Staff

SteveInTampa Pillar of the Community United States 4637 Posts	Posted 05/09/2024 2:37 pm I'm guessing it's a stray, random stamp made long after the note was issued. A common misconception is "the ink is under the seal or serial numbers". It's an optical illusion of sorts. The ink used in the stamp doesn't stick to the ink used by the BEP and it "appears" to be under the original printing. Report this Post to the Staff
