/bump for a good topic and some great stories!
I wasn't around for the change, but back when I started collecting coins as a kid in the mid 80's I do remember silver coins being at least present in common change. I saved a few of them, but now I wish I was into coin roll hunting back then and pulled more out of circulation! I can't find any these days. I'm getting tempted to start buying silver coins for 10x face just to search them for my albums.
