I am curious if there is anyone out there sometimes buys coins specifically for the year it was minted?
I have a few years
2003 for my daughter's birthday
1978 for my birthday
1942 for my dads birthday
and for some reason.... I seem lately to have started specifically buying 1899. There is no real reason behind it. I just like that year.

 HMMMMMMMMMM, funny you mentioned this Melissa, about the 1899 year! I developed a passion for this particular year too about a year ago. (Are you a Scorpio by any chance?)I can't explain why, but one day I just felt compelled to complete the entire set of Canadian 1899 decimal coinage. (1 cent-50cent) Just last month I completed my last purchase of an I.C.C.S., 1899 Canada half dollar, EF-40. Voila! My thirst for the year 1899 has been fulfilled. My 1899 year set is as follows: (all are I.C.C.S. slabbed) ~1c>MS-63, red ~5c>MS-64 ~10c>MS-64 (small "9") ~10c>AU-55 (large "9") ~25c>EF-40 ~50c>EF-40 Glenn Edited by glenzy1

I was born in 1975 but that is not really a challenge for most countries so I try to pick up 1875 coins when I find them, that is quite a bit more challenging and expensive.

I like the year 1909 and am also partial to 1921.

If I like the coin, I'll pick it up for my collection regardless of the date  I presented my dad with an AU mint set of 1937 (his date of birth) and he loved it. So, I like putting year sets together as gifts. swcoin.ecrater.com

hi glenzy, actually I am a virgo. I dont know what got me started on that year. I do not have anything in ICCS slabs for that year though. My canadian 1899 coins are as follows (so far) 1899 newfoundland 20 cents x 4 (2 large nines and 2 small nines) 1899 newfoundland 50 cents x 2 (1 large nines and 1 small nines) 1899 large cent x 3 1899 10 cents x 2 ( 1 large nines and 1 small nines) I do have some world coins and US as well and british and such, but I tend to drift towards the canadian stuff more for that year. I like year sets as well as gifts! I find it more personal and interesting than most things you could give someone.

Not really any favs yet. I do plan to put a type set together with years from all my parents/grand parents birth years eventually :)

G'day, I've completed the English coins of 1820: the year my first ancestors came to Australia.
French Empire of 1811: Bonaparte's zenith, and the coinage reflects the history, and the politics.
I've started on U.S. coins of 1853, the year great-great-grandfather came from Philadelphia, via San Francisco & Honolulu, to Australia.
I'm making progress with 1887 coins of the British Empre: that was a year of recoinage, so that's a big project.
Next, I'm thinking of 1914, 1918, and 1919, as my own commemoration of WW1.

The problem with "1966" is that the U.S. only did Special Mint Sets, not Proof Sets, and only the Half-Dollar had any silver content, so my 'pride and joy' from that year is the 1966 Canada Prooflike Set with four 80% Silver coins. |

I collect a lot of 1976 coins. It's my birthyear, and they actually made special coins that year . . . just to celebrate my birth right?

I was born in 1916...so if anyone would like to give me a complete set of 1916 coins, I'd be grateful. MS grade not necessary; AU would be fine. |

Never thought of saving the coins of my birth year and I don't think I will.
I do like 1880s and 1890s though.

1878 is my favorite year to collect. It started with my love of 1878 Morgans and now even though I didn't purchase allot of 1878 coins for my 7070 album if the coin was made in that time period I always looked for the year 1878 first
